The CIT Mathematics Examination is an initiative between the Office of the Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Department of Mathematics. This Examination, which has run since 2010, facilitates students who apply for CIT courses and who may not have achieved the required entry standard in Mathematics.

This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the CIT Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher-level performance) courses with a Higher Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard. Successful candidates are made an offer in Round 2.

This Examination, which has traditionally taken place the week after the release of the Leaving Certificate Results, will take place after the release of finalised grades which is projected to be as close as possible to the traditional Leaving Certificate date.

Once this date has been advised, the Institute will release a date for the 2020 Mathematics Entry Examination.

The CIT Mathematics Examination reflects the actual Mathematical requirements of CIT programmes. It is marked according to procedures and criteria set out by the Department of Mathematics at CIT.

• A pass in the CIT Mathematics Examination (i.e. 40% in Paper 1 or 40% overall) will allow an applicant to replace the Leaving Certificate Mathematics requirement of Grade O6/H7 minimum with a Grade O6/H7 minimum (Ordinary or Higher Level) in another Leaving Certificate subject.
   
• Attaining a qualifying standard in the CIT Mathematics Examination does not in itself guarantee a place on any course in CIT. The cut-off points for all courses will still apply.
